Ana Silvia Avendaño-Curiel

Ana Silvia was born and raised in Mexico City and began dancing at age six. Raised by a single mother, dance became a way to keep her occupied and off the streets. She quickly developed a passion for and a deeper connection to her culture as a form of self-expression. She studied in Polanco and Coyoacán during her early years to hone her skills in ballet, folk dance, and flamenco. At age 13, she moved with her mother and siblings to Colorado and joined the Sabor Latino dance company in Denver. While earning a degree in International Affairs from Colorado State University (CSU), she continued to develop her artistry in hip-hop, flamenco, and folk dance.

After graduating, she created and developed an after-school folk dance program in two Boulder elementary schools. As a social worker, Ana Silvia incorporated dance and somatic practices into her work with families and students. She currently serves as Equity Policy Advisor for the City of Boulder, leading various efforts to achieve social change and justice within government systems. Ana Silvia is a principal dancer with the ArtistiCO Dance Company in Denver, where she has had the honor of performing on prestigious stages such as the Ellie Caulkins Opera House and the Newman Center at DU, sharing the stage with dancers from Colorado, New York, and Mexico City.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

This workshop will be an interactive workshop, initially self-directed, and later collective.

The participants will create their own movements depending on the three emotions that each person identifies to bring the body through its natural process of "shaking" or releasing certain emotions that may be stuck.

This will be an exploratory and participatory workshop. Participants will integrate everyday movements in a creative and collective way. The purpose of this workshop is to release, feel, and acknowledge emotions within the body that need to be released or integrated for complete physical, emotional, and psychological balance.
